What we believe
Disciples affirm the authority
of scripture to offer guidance and direction for life, both as individuals
and together in the church. We strongly affirm the believer's ability to read
and interpret scripture. The encounter with the Word of God within the words
of the Bible guides us toward salvation and calls us to be one as Christ and
God are one. We affirm with the apostle Peter the Great
Confession that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Matthew
16.16). This confession unites Christians in every age and every place. We find direction for our moral life in the
Great Commandment: to love God with all our heart, mind and strength, and
to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22.37-39). This commandment is
the most important one to Jesus. It is the most important one to us. We are charged with the Great Commission
of bringing the good news to all people, baptizing them in God's holy name
(Matthew 28.19). This commission leads us to reach out to those in need
through various forms of evangelization and mission. For more detail about Disciples identity and
practice, go to Who Are the Disciples of Christ? Affirmation of Faith
A helpful summary of our
basic character is found in the Preamble to the Design of the Christian
Church, which, instead of listing required beliefs, describes our
understanding of Christian behavior. Notice the verbs: confess, accept,
rejoice, ... As members of the Christian Church, we confess
that Jesus is the Christ, In Christ’s name and by his grace We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, Through baptism into Christ In the communion of the Holy Spirit At the table of the Lord Within the universal church In the bonds of Christian faith Blessing, glory and honor be to God forever.
Amen. |
